What does LMGTFY mean?
LMGTFY stands for “Let Me Google That For You”. It is the internet’s classic sarcastic reply to a question that could have been answered with a quick web search. Instead of typing out an answer, you send a link. The link plays a short animation of the question being typed into a search engine, and the point makes itself: you could have googled that.
How LMGTFY is used
LMGTFY links show up wherever people ask questions the internet already knows the answer to: forums, group chats, comment threads, office messengers. A typical exchange looks like this:
Alex: hey what time zone is Iceland in?
Sam: https://lmgtfy.com/?q=what+time+zone+is+iceland+in
Alex: …point taken.
Whoever clicks the link watches their own question get typed into a search box, then lands on the results. It is a reminder that search engines exist, delivered as a joke instead of a lecture.
How the tool works
- Type the question on the LMGTFY homepage, exactly as it was asked to you.
- Pick a search engine. Google is the classic, but Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo and others work too.
- Get the link and send it. When your friend opens it, the animation plays out their question step by step and ends at the actual search results.
Where LMGTFY came from
The site launched in late 2008, back when “just google it” was becoming the answer to almost everything. The joke landed right away. It spread through tech forums and early social media, got passed around millions of times, and settled into internet culture for good. The acronym shows up in mainstream slang dictionaries, and the phrase outgrew the site a long time ago. The tool has been translated into dozens of languages over the years, because people everywhere want a way to say you could have googled that.
A note on etiquette
An LMGTFY link is a tease, not tech support. Send it to friends and colleagues who can take a joke. Used well, it says: I believe you can find this yourself. Used badly, it says something less kind. Aim for the first one.
